The official launch of the combined research project between Sun Resorts, the University of Mauritius and the University of Western Australia to address the erosion issue on the Western coast took place on Wednesday 14 November at La Pirogue Hotel in Flic en Flac. The research works will be based in this resort during three years in order to study the reef status and the ecosystem of the lagoon. The research works are financed up to Rs 5 million by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC).
The equipment will be installed during the week at Flic en Flac beach to study closely waves, temperature, and currents every day. There will also be tests for the restoration of reefs in the region. The CEO of Sun Limited David Anderson said that the group is happy to work closely with the authorities to improve the state of the coastline. Two employees of Sun Ltd also form part of the research team.
The Executive Director of the TEC, Sid Nair, Natacha Morris from the Australian High Commission, Andrew Pomeroy from the University of Western Australia, the General Manager of the Beach Authority, Dhuneeroy Bissessur, and Nadeem Naurally, Lecturer at the University of Mauritius, were present at the launch ceremony.
