Air Mauritius has recorded a net loss of 2.8 million Euros (Rs 112 million) for the second quarter of its financial year 2018-2019, against a net profit of 11.6 million Euros (Rs 464 million) for the same period during the previous exercise. According to the national airline, this negative result is due to the increase in the price of fuel, the growth of the activity, financial costs for the purchase of new aircrafts, the impact of the exchange rate and the increase in salaries. For the first half ending the 30th September 2018, the airline has recorded a net negative result of 17.6 million.
In spite of this drop, Air Mauritius has recorded a growth of 8.8 % in the number of passengers for the quarter amounting to 464 689 travellers. The number of seats available has also been increased on some destinations, such as Amsterdam, Mumbai and Cape Town, with an occupancy rate of 81.3% for the period. The earnings of the company have also increased by 7% with a total amount of 145.4 million Euros (Rs 5.8 billion). Air Mauritius is planning to review its strategy as regards to the current economic context, namely to have a more resilient model to face the fluctuations in the price of fuel and the exchange rates, and consolidate the regional networks to position Mauritius as a strategic hub for the region.
