Blue Penny Museum hosting the original works of Pablo Picasso!

The Blue Penny Museum in Caudan will be hosting an exceptional exhibition from the 22nd November 2018 to the 15th January 2019: some 45 works of the famous artist Pablo Picasso will be displayed for the first time in the Indian Ocean. The idea of this event was born from an encounter between Emmanuel Richon, Curator of the Blue Penny Museum, and Steve Sowamy, an art dealer, born in Mauritius and living in France. When he came to the museum ten years ago, he asked to meet Emmanuel Richon, who organised a visit that he will never forget. It is when he came back to Mauritius last year that Steve Sowamy had the idea to organise an exhibition with his friend. The name of Picasso was mentioned as a challenge, and it all started there. “You can ask me why Pablo Picasso, and I will reply ‘why not?’. This artist has created more than 50 000 works, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, drawings, tapestries, sketch drawings, stamps…”, said Emmanuel Richon during a conference held on Thursday 22nd November at the Blue Penny Museum. 45 works of Picasso will be exposed, illustrating themes favoured by the artist, such as bullfighting and mythology. Furthermore, there will be the broadcast of Henri Georges Clouzot documentary film, Le Mystère Picasso, considered by the French government as a National Treasure.

This exhibition unveils a beautiful chapter in the life of Pablo Picasso. From the works exposed at the Blue Penny Museum, the oldest one dates back to 1922: “Nature morte au banjo et au compotier”. Did you know that Pablo Picasso was the human being who has been the most represented on stamps? You can find his works, the photography of his portrait and even his signature on these stamps. 180 of the 200 stamps dedicated to the artist will be on display at the museum.

Various medium will be part of the exhibition representing the different periods of creation of Pablo Picasso. Three of the master pieces exposed are valued at 1.5 million Euros, namely ‘La Pique’, in gouache and China ink, and ‘Le peintre et son modèle’… Steve Sowamy also mentioned the hard work achieved to realise this exhibition. “We have moved heaven and earth to get borrowers, convince financiers, find insurers, organise with freight companies and, above all, imagine the exhibition that was taking shape as the researches were moving ahead”.

Beachcomber Resorts & Hotels group is among the various partners of the event.
